Believed to be crafted by the celebrated Carcassi brothers in Florence circa 1740, this

master cello represents nearly three centuries of musical history. With exceptional

tonal depth and an impeccable provenance, it has been appraised by Florian Leonhard

MBE at $US 500,000 - a figure that reflects both its rarity and its extraordinary artistic

legacy.

The Classic Cello International Competition

OCTARR presents the world premiere of a new model in cultural patronage: tokenised

and fractionalised ownership of a living, performing masterpiece to be loaned initially

to the winner of the competition. The cello can be seen and heard during the inaugural

Classic Cello International Competition - hosted for the first time in London by the

Royal College of Music, 26 March to 6 April 2026.

THE COMPETITION PRIZE

The winning cellist receives €50,000 and becomes the next custodian of the

instrument - on loan for a minimum of two years, supported by your collective

patronage and guided by the Florian Leonhard Fellowship.

75, to part with his companion of the last 40 years. After study with

Rostropovitch and Tortelier, he joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra at

age 18. His career includes Principal Cello at the Sydney Symphony

Orchestra, Sydney String Quartet, Professor at various tertiary

institutions and Director of Music at the ABC (Australian Broadcasting
